Chessplode

Checkmate even if you're bad

Finding the time to finish a chess match isn’t easy. Looking to speed it up? Consider Chessplode, a thrilling, fast-paced alternative to the game of kings.

Chessplode employs a simple twist: when you capture an opponent’s piece, all the other pieces in the same row and column explode – theirs and yours. That is, unless a king occupies the row or column, in which case it’s a standard, non-explodey capture.

Capturing a piece triggers a blast that zaps other pieces in the same row and column.

It’s a game changer, as you can wipe out several pieces at once with a single move. The king – normally a piece you want to keep shielded – can protect your forces by standing in formation with them. It’s a wild reinvention that requires sharp improvisation.

Chessplode’s single-player levels are shrewdly designed puzzles. Maybe you’ll have nine knights to work with, or maybe your AI opponent’s pieces will be mingled among your own. Each new level requires fresh tactical tricks.

With practice, you’ll master the subtle tactics of reimagined chess.

For a greater challenge, take on chess buffs from around the world – make your move and get notified when your opponent takes theirs – or play head-to-head with a friend on the same device.

You can even design custom levels with outrageous setups, like one pawn versus six queens. But before you can upload them for other fans to discover, you’ll need to beat Chessplode’s savagely smart AI at your own game. Good luck, rook.
