You’ll face a new threat every few seconds in Boost Buddies. It might be a spiked block flying across the screen. It could be a trio of buzzsaw blades whirling around, or four ghosts floating in a tight circle. A pair of powerful lasers, perhaps. Okay, now how about lasers and ghosts?
Your goal is to navigate each of these hazards to reach a crown at the top of the screen. Your furry avatar boosts upwards with each tap and crashes back down as soon as you’re either hit or you grab your shiny prize. Each crown counts as a single point – and if you get 20 you’re doing well.
Stages are randomised so you can never get complacent. Pretty soon you’ll recognise the levels you can breeze through and the ones you hope don’t come up. But gradually, run by run, you’ll get to know their quirks and start making progress.
Then, just as you’re used to getting past those stubby logs with the sharpened ends, they’ll show up swinging from a moving platform, or in between a narrow gap lined with spikes.
Thankfully, the controls are set up to give you the fine control you need. And if it’s getting a bit too much, you can practise against unchanging hazards in Levels mode – mastering these slightly longer stages might just make the difference on your next high-score attempt.
So it’s tension and release all the way, and it escalates as you get closer to topping your best score. Like the very best arcade games, Boost Buddies can drive you potty – yet you’ll be powerless to resist another go. And another. And another.
