HOW TO

Take stunning night-time photos

The sun’s gone down, the clocks have rolled back, but you don't have to stop snapping. Whether you're looking to capture firework-themed snaps this festive night or remember your evening out without squinting to see who's in shot, apps can help your low-light efforts. In fact, we've captured our favourite night-time photos using the three below.

Manual focus for beautiful blurs

City nightscapes are a mishmash of light sources that require more than a shutter click to faithfully capture. Manual focus and blurring techniques can reveal a city’s depth and beauty – Procam 6, for example, allows for adjustments in AF to produce artistic bokeh (lens blur) and superimposed blending. You can also reduce the exposure to minimise background brightness and give city lights a pop-and-shimmer effect.

Not enough light? No problem - take an intentionally blurry photo.

Detail even in low light

Controlling image noise is especially difficult at night. Hydra has a trick for getting around this – its ‘Lo-Light' mode stacks multiple frames of a static shot to form one image. This intensifies the direct light while decreasing noise to achieve great image quality. Perfect for stationary objects.

Night moves

Cars in motion, flickering flames and shimmering stars…NightCap captures these fleeting night-time moments in profound detail. Presets such as ‘Light Trails’, ‘Long Exposure’ and ‘Star Trails’ save you from having to trial-and-error your way to the right shot.

The steadier you hold your phone, the better these shots will turn out.
