Hot this week: Lemmings

There’s a real art to turning a classic game into a modern mobile game that retains all the joys of the original. And Lemmings is a terrific example of how to do it right.

Players of a certain vintage will certainly remember Lemmings, the much-loved puzzle game that spawned many a sequel across PC and consoles in the nineties.

In those games – and of course in this App Store incarnation – you help the hapless rodents to the exit by giving them different abilities to overcome obstacles and hazards. The thing is, they never stop walking, so you’ve got to bestow those life-saving powers before they stroll off the edge of a platform or into a ruddy great spike.

So, you’ll start out by making them tunnel through blocks, build staircases and open umbrellas so they can survive a fall. Soon, keeping these critters from meeting a messy end gets much more complex, with new traps to tackle and abilities to consider.

And the reason it’s hot right now? The game’s creator Sad Puppy has just added a whole bunch of new stuff to the game, including even more levels, collectible Lemmings, a brand new Challenge mode (featuring super hardcore levels for pro players) plus a redesigned Tournament mode.
