This simple but ingenious gem deserves your immediate attention: it’s among the best arcade games we’ve played.
At first glance, it appears to be a classic brick-breaker, but in reverse: you slide your finger left and right to move a spaceship at the top of the screen, bouncing a ball to smash blocks at the bottom.
Only they’re not blocks, they’re buildings. The ball is actually a deadly orb of destructive energy. And clearing the screen is only half the job: once you’ve turned a building to rubble, you’ll need to scoop up its occupants with your tractor beam. The twist is that you can only activate it by lifting your finger from the screen.
Since you need to prevent your ball from shooting off into space, it’s a fine balance between hoovering up those humans and scooting across to send the ball back earthward.
If you’re not careful, that means you can start lifting a human up, only to shift away and watch in horror as they drop back down and land with a splat. Disaster!
To get a five-star rating you’ll need to abduct everyone. Easier said than done when you’ve got a large, green building-obliterating ball to juggle.
But wait: the humans you’ve ‘rescued’ can be fed into a machine to unlock power-ups, such as a handy temporary shield that will return the ball if you let it zip past you.
Throw in multi-ball and missile bursts, and you can flatten these cityscapes in seconds. And with a soundtrack so good that the alien will bop along to it between levels, Break N Take makes playing as the bad guy feel great.
