Enjoying the great outdoors used to require a compass, an unwieldy waterproof map and a degree in orienteering. Now all you need is your iPhone and OS Maps – thanks, technology!
Helping you explore the world one footpath or walkway at a time while building on points of interest and major thoroughfares, OS Maps offers full typographical breakdowns of the whole of Great Britain.
It lets you better explore your surroundings in 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 scale, and combines traditional navigation tools with some serious outdoor exploration-transforming smarts.
As well as helping you discover existing walkways and cycle paths, the app lets you record and share your own routes. You can even download planned routes for when your jaunts into the wilderness come at the cost of strong signal.
It’s when map reading feels too laborious that things get really clever. Hold up your device and through augmented reality (AR) you will see surrounding geographical features – such as mountains and rivers – as well as nearby points of interest virtually highlighted, alongside how far away they are.
You can even use AR to preview your upcoming hikes with the Tabletop 3D view, allowing you to digitally explore your planned route before setting out. The only thing it can’t do is go on the walk for you.
