These days you’re as likely to see iPads on stage as you are guitars. No wonder: the App Store is packed with extraordinary musical instrument apps, of which DRC - Polyphonic Synthesizer is one.

It’s like all your favourite analogue synths without the expense, unreliability or the need to haul them up and down stairs at gigs.

The most important thing is that DRC sounds great. It uses a familiar combination of twin oscillators and a resonant filter to deliver up to 8 discrete voices, and it adds fun creative tools such as “strum bars” and a keyboard mode for effortless creation of interesting chord progressions.

DRC is equipped with a simple user interface and plenty of features.

It’s perfectly usable on iPhone thanks to its carefully designed interface, and on iPad there’s more room for the various filters.

It’s a techno toy box that produces wonderfully fat bass and some really sweet string sounds. It wasn’t long before we were channelling our inner John Carpenter to create sinister 70s-style movie themes.

It also plays nice with your other apps. It works with Ableton Link and Audiobus, and it has cloud sync that enables you to share your presets with other devices: there’s a version for Mac and Windows that enables you to use DRC as a VST instrument with your favourite music production apps.
