Description

Go on a journey through the changeful history of Wesel

Because of the devastating airstrikes during the Second World War the city of Wesel and all traces of its more than seven centuries old history were almost completely wiped out. The Timewindow App brings this history back to life. This interactive app, which is based on “augmented reality”, enables the user to go on a virtual time travel by looking through the camera of a smart phone or tablet as through a window into the past. The Tiemwindow App accompanies you on a journey through the history of the city and lets you experience first hand what Wesel once looked like.

Become acquainted with the diverse face of Wesel on eighteen select locations. With this app you can start your own guided tour through the city centre and some adjacent but no less historic places. Your own smartphone or tablet functions meanwhile like a keyhole to times gone by. As soon as you open the time window at the locations, historical photographs blend via augmented reality with the present view. In this way you have a direct comparison of the situation at that location in past and present. Further information about the historical pictures is provided in text form and via audio guide.

In addition there is a digital map that navigates you through the city to the various locations. You can adjust your route individually and, according to your interests, your current location or available time, you can make your tour as long or short as you want.

The PLC WeselMarketing introduces with this innovative format a completely new way to discover the city and its history. The Timewindow Wesel provides an exciting, practical and memorable presentation of facts which are accessible everywhere and indefinitely. The app is available in two languages (German and English) and addresses the people of Wesel, school classes as well as tourists.

The contents were produced by WeselMarketing in cooperation with the Wesel City Archives. The speaker of the German language audio guide is the prominent Tagesschau news anchor Jan Hofer, who was born in Wesel. The translation of the texts into English as well as the dubbing of the English language audio guide was done by pupils of the 11th grade Bilingual History class of the local Konrad-Duden-Gymnasium (grammar school).

Timewindow Wesel is also available online. After a successful download of the app all contents can be accessed without internet connection.
