Things made in WonderWorlds so far: a love story starring two walking hams; a sci-fi epic about lonely biscuit-obsessed space rocks; a game where you throw children into a gorilla enclosure (it’s not as dark as it sounds).

This new creation from UK studio Glowmade is both a whimsical puzzle-platformer and a game creation tool. (If you know a bit about games, you’ll appreciate the developer’s pitch for the game: “LittleBigPlanet plus Toad’s Treasure Tracker plus Instagram”).

Those of you familiar with LittleBigPlanet will feel at home in WonderWorlds.

Judged as a traditional single player game alone, WonderWorlds is a delightful thing – a handsome game about navigating your way through a world that looks like it’s been made out of cardboard and photos and other pleasantly tactile stuff.

But the part with the most dizzying potential is the level creator. Every stage in the single player game was made in this tool, and they come as part of the game so you can create something cool yourself. You can even use your own photos – filtered and edited as you please – to add a personal flourish.

Before Glowmade, tech lead Johnny Hopper had been making intuitive game creation tools in the LittleBigPlanet games, and it shows. It's easier than you think to make a level that looks cool and actually works.

You can customise your avatar to your heart's content.

“One of the most delightful things is watching kids create in the game,” Hopper tells us. “They're so unstructured, so freeform – and they'll make something that makes no sense at all to anyone, but they love it and are so proud!”

Every creation is shareable within the game, so there are thousands of weird creations to play with, all made by the player community. Indeed, Hopper fully expects these creators to come up with ideas that surpass what his team has dreamt up.

It's easier than you think to make something that looks cool.

“We do get a lot of ‘how did you do that' moments,” says Hopper. “That’s one of the joys of making a game like this – the toolkit is so powerful and people are so creative that you are constantly surprised.”

Play or create – it’s up to you. WonderWorlds is a game full of ambition and one put together with true craftsmanship. And if you’re stuck for inspiration, Hopper has a few ideas to get you started: “A medieval zoo, some kind of castle of superhero loneliness, or just a mad photo gallery of your holiday? A race track, a cheese festival, a turbo-powered hedgehog helicopter – it’s all there for the building.”
