The best chess software for ipad!
I am writing this review from the viewpoint of a chess player who owns tchesspro, shredder, hiarcs, fritz chess and stockfish. I actually use only tchesspro, which is the only chess app I keep installed on my device. The interface and user-friendliness of the other apps are very limited compared to tchesspro. The most important feature of the app is the way it handles pgn databases. You can load your database in various ways e.g. through email, web, itunes etc. I use this feature constantly to solve tactical or endgame positions against the built-in engine. A great plus is that you can hide the moves of the solution (if there are in the pgn file) and set the game to open to the initial position. In this way you avoid indadvertedly viewing the solution. Variations and annotations of the pgn games can be viewed easily through the program. The other chess apps I previously mentioned handle pgn files in the most elementary and not user friendly matter.
The strength of the chess engine is impressive and it can beat you easily if you are not a grandmaster. The app can be set to use dual cores on the ipad. You can also set time limits for analysis and display the analysis lines as you please. Customization, setting up positions, 3d view, blindfold chess, game center playing are also provided. The portrait mode is the best I have used, although you can play in landscape mode too.
The strong point of the app is Tom Kerrigan, who is always available to answer questions and accept suggestions. He actually developed the navigation buttons for the pgn database that I have suggested. He placed them above the chessboard, so that you can easily load the next or previous game in your active database (you can have as many as you like by the way)
All these features work in the same way in your iphone as well.
Overall, I am very happy with my purchase and I am looking forward for the next improvements.
