MotionShield is a new generation of automatic crash notification systems for mobile devices, aiming to go beyond protecting the user inside only the confines of a moving vehicle. It becomes a personal guard in all the user’s activities like driving, commuting, participating in extreme sports and so forth.
When inside a moving vehicle, the system takes into account, in real time, all the parameters that affect driving safety, dynamically calculating the moving vehicle’s risk, based on the prevailing conditions in the area of observation. For example, on a road, maximum speeds vary depending on whether there is sunshine, rain, frost, fog or if the road network is in various stages of disrepair (potholes, road pits, etc.).
The operating principles of the system are based on a brand new logic:
• Continuously monitor the sensors of the mobile device to record spatiotemporal and velocity data.
• Transmit position coordinates and motion data to a central information management system.
• Combine those with driving behavior elements and tire traction, historical evidence of serious traffic accidents, the road network topology, onboard diagnostics and many other parameters, to assess the likelihood of the user getting involved in an accident.
This information is utilized by Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support subsystems in real time, warning users about possible hazards that could cause an accident.
This approach achieves the following objectives:
• Seamless operation, even in areas not covered by a mobile telephony signal.
• Protecting the user in all their activities, in addition to driving.
• Personalized safety notifications warning the user early enough about potentially dangerous situations, they may encounter shortly.
• Timely updating the Public Safety Answering Point for possible accident involvement.
• Dynamic calculation of a moving vehicle’s risk.
• Assessing the likelihood of an accident. Assess the probability of an emergency event of hundreds of parameters by a neural network and stochastic models.
• Driving profile. The user can have a clear picture of their driving behavior. The system offers suggestions and reminders tailored towards improving driving safety and performance.
• Specialized, on demand reports.
• Road network topology. Outline the morphology of the road network with slopes, inclinations, abrupt turns, etc.
• Road network state map. Dynamically map the condition of the road network, to improve driving safety.
• Dynamic speed limits map. Real time mapping of the maximum safe driving speed per road segment.
• Advanced analytics.
• Roadside assistance notifications with OBD-II data. The onboard diagnostics protocol offers a holistic perspective into the state of the vehicle, all the time. Retrieving a snapshot of the current vehicle state can help a mechanic tremendously in pinpointing a malfunction and providing expert advice, saving time and resources.
• Diagnostic car tests. In conjunction with car safety notifications, the information is used to alert the driver of actions needed, pertaining to car repair and maintenance.
• Traffic statistics.
• Accident verification using multiple methods. Multi-tiered method of accident verification than cancels false positives and filters fuzzy decisions.
