Finding myself

Your app helped me at a time when I was so very lost, six weeks after my husband died. I felt that I was stuck in a bottomless pit of grief and despair, with no way out.
Rushing through a shopping mall busy with plans to buy food, I found I was drawn irresistibly to the glass railings with thoughts that it would be so easy to climb over, hang by my fingertips for just a moment and then let go, to oblivion. I dragged myself away and sat shivering on a seat, resolutely looking away from that awful temptation.
I knew then that I badly needed help. But I live in the Far East and it is impossible to find good grief counselling here that is relevant to my situation. I was in a mixed marriage for 50 years and we made two different cultures work.
The next day, I picked up an old newspaper, that I had kept but not read, and there was an article on your app. God is good.
I felt such relief when you praised me for actually making the positive step to open your app. I did not feel so terribly alone.
And every night after that, as I could not sleep till 4am, I sat in bed listening to each day’s ‘lessons’. You were my safe and reassuring guide as I explored my grief and loneliness, though I must say that the second topic, confronting your grief, shook me to the core. I talked back, I sobbed uncontrollably, but in the end, I heard myself saying to my grief, ‘Don’t worry, I will look after you.’ It was at that point that I realised that my grief was separate from ME. It was of me but it was not the defining part of me or the essence of me, and I knew then that eventually I would become more me again.

Six months on, I am still a work in progress, but when I need more support, I turn to your app and revisit some of your topics, or even sometimes just to hear your reassuring voice. You have given me strength, strength enough to be able to support a friend, in South Africa, whose wife is dying of the same cancer that killed my husband. Six months ago, I would never have believed that I would be able to do this.
And I thank you for it, from the bottom of my heart.
