Over the past month we’ve taken the opportunity to reflect and excitingly plot and plan the year ahead. If you’re interested you can find our thoughts for 2024 here: https://portal.app/campfire/thoughts-for-2024

Although, it hasn’t all been planning - we’ve packed this release with improvements and fixes for a number of issues you’ve helped flag.

Improvements
- Better resolution selection for screens in portrait orientation.
- You no longer need to relaunch the app after you ‘Clear Cache’.
- ‘Support Info’ now includes better diagnostic data.
- ‘Support Info’ exports now have improved customer feedback and error handling.

Fixes
- Philips Hue lights which use IP address connections are now more reliable.
- Fixes lighting discovery and connection issues on new macOS versions.
- Network connection errors which prevent motion visuals playing are better identified and retried.
- The specific loading error preventing motion visuals playing is now shown in Portal’s UI.
- Audio streaming now waits for a network connection and can better recover from network errors.
- Collection subtitles in the ‘All Portal’ section of the library are no longer cut off.
- Portals with longer names now are better spaced when displayed on smaller screens.
- The ‘Now Playing’ bar height is now correct across different screen sizes.
- Portal’s menu bar window now positions itself correctly when opened on secondary displays.
- Fixes a rare crash when retrying audio downloads
- Audio downloads that are being retried are now cancelled correctly when stopping playback

Amazing Experience

Bought the lifetime membership when this app first came out. Worth every penny!

(would be good to know the CPU or power usage when Motion visual is turned on)

And a massive thank you for being one of our earliest early adopters - without your support and the support of all those other who took that early leap of faith we might not still be around today!

On the CPU front, when using Motion visuals usage is ~3-5%, but worth checking out locally: "Finder" > "Utilities" > "Activity Monitor", and on the battery usage especially if you're using an Apple Silicon Mac then this is fairly minimal, very similar in fact to playing a regular video. I hope that helps.

Lovely, well designed app

This is a really wonderfully designed noise app - clean, intuitive to use and just nice to look at. The only challenge it has is a currently limited selection, which I hope they can improve soon. If they did expand it enough I would consider the paid subscription.

Thanks so much for your incredibly kind words. We're delighted to hear that you're a Portal fan!

On the Apple 📺 front - you're absolutely bang on the same wavelength as us - we'd love to bring Portal to Apple TV. We've no doubt it'd be an even more stunningly immersive experience especially with the larger, higher resolution displays alongside a surround sound set up and synced lighting.

The good news is our Mac app is a step in that direction, helping us lay some important groundwork towards making that happen. Not only have we totally redesigned Portal's UI to suit both macOS and tvOS (less touch-oriented than the iPhone & iPad), but we've also put in place all the back of house infrastructure to support streaming that is a necessity now that we can use up to 8K motion visuals on larger, high resolution displays (downloads which is how our iOS and iPadOS apps currently operate just wouldn't be feasible as the files would be far too large). What's more, we've transitioned to SwiftUI to set us up for better cross-platform support, including Apple TV and Vision Pro...

In short, thankfully we're well placed to take things forward on the Apple TV front. We've still got a few surprises up our sleeve to take the Mac experience up a notch or two, and of course we're still a small indie team of four, so I'm afraid we don't currently have a date for when Apple TV will land, but rest assured it's certainly on the roadmap.
