It might sound about as interesting as watching paint dry, but Home Design Makeover is an absolute gem of a game built around one of life’s more mundane tasks.
Home Design Makeover is essentially Changing Rooms meets puzzle game. You’re given a room and a client, and your job is to make their room look brilliant. You can choose the wallpaper and the furniture, the windows and the lights, and the more of a makeover you manage the happier your customer becomes.
Where it gets really fun is how you pay for your grand vision. Everything costs virtual money, and to earn that you need to play matching games of which there are more than a thousand. Each puzzle gives you a board of coloured shapes, and your job is to get three identical shapes in a row. When you do, the shapes above them drop down. The more you match, the more virtual money you earn.
The puzzles start simple but quickly get harder and more hilarious, with combos and special tiles enabling you to clear more of the board in ever more amusing ways while you work out the best way to destroy obstacles and relocate pot plants. The matching becomes targeted too, requiring you to collect a certain number of specified colours in a limited amount of moves.
Home Design Makeover is fast, fun and endlessly entertaining. In fact, it’s pretty much everything real DIY isn’t.
