Day One

Your journal for life

View

When you’re trying to capture everything going on in your life, sometimes text isn’t enough. Day One is a beautiful, modern digital journal that goes beyond basic “Dear diary” entries: Your reflections can include photos, audio, video, sketches and even the location where you added each entry. Everything is encrypted and securely backed up so your private thoughts stay private and safe.

What we love: How convenient it is to create beautiful journal entries. Open the app on Mac, iPhone or iPad and start typing (or on Apple Watch and start speaking!); then add media and tags – Day One handles the layout and formatting. Have a quick idea? Use the app’s systemwide menu to jot it down without leaving your current app. Creating a retroactive post? Control-click a date on the calendar, an event in the Events list or a location on the map view to start an associated entry. Need some inspiration? Use Day One’s daily prompts or customisable templates to get the words flowing. It’s never been easier to tell your story.

Day One’s calendar view lets you quickly see the days you completed an entry, colour-coded by topic.

Quick tip: Day One’s organisational features make it a snap to find specific entries and browse your memories. You can see all entries for a particular day; view favourites or entries with a specific tag; set filters to show only posts with photos, checklists or particular activities (like running or riding a train); or use the built-in map to see all the places where you’ve journaled. Miss the tactile feel of a physical notebook? Day One even lets you order gorgeous printed books from your journals!

The photos view provides a beautiful timeline of your photo-based entries.

Meet the creator: Bloom Built founder Paul Mayne originally created Day One for himself: “Before Day One, I had a makeshift way of journaling – a combination of a to-do list, with a daily alert that would pop up and a basic journaling template,” he says. The app became so popular the company quickly grew to over a dozen employees. One of the team’s favourite features is the built-in Share extensions for Safari and Photos that let you quickly save quotes, URLs, photos and videos to your journal.
