Better than what you heared.
Im not going to make a long speach about Hs, but i tell you one thing: everything you heared previously ( pay2win, need to grind af , etc) is outdated in the face of their “newest feature” : Battelground; you dont have to know anything about the previous stuff, you can play it as a begginer, they have a nice training period, and after that you can have fun without much effort of keep tracking any kind of “meta”, for free , for 20-30 minutes per game, take a try, best game on phone platforme, and also really decent on pc if this is your type of game.

Used to be good
I used to play this game when it came out for 2years. Yes, I had to grind hard for a strong deck, but it was enjoyable, and learned the cards in along the Way. I downloaded it a week ago again, and boy it is different. I think the game adapted for today's kids. Everything is faster stronger and does 3 more things than it used to. What once was a 4-3 minion that dealt 3dmg, now its a 4-5 and does 5. The combos and the effects are just insane. Now you can wipe out the whole board in turn 3, and also summon 3 8-8 somehow. Everything does 5more things, and the spells create more spells that affect your other cards, meanwhile you can forge them, make them stronger, cheaper, and 1 spell becomes 5, and you can clear endlessly, and never run out of cards. You can give your minions reborn, rush, heal, deathrattle for the neighbours, while getting 3more copies in your hand that you can play for free, with 2 cards that you got from a random silver 2mana mech. Mages got 3mana deal 3 dmg to every enemy minion spells, hunters got like 3mana pyroblast, priest instead of MC they can destroy your minion and resummon it with more stats...etc Arena is no different somehow everyone creates decks like that. The app itself is good, never had problems with that. But it is overwhealming even for me who played it for 2 years.
Miss the old Heartstone
Todays Heartstone is luck based rather than skill based game. If you top deck a broken card you win. If you have a counter for that card in your hand you win. If the outcomes are for you, you win. Luck on luck.
Miss the old times with the priest, when you needed turn 10 to even think about doing some broken things, then putting down a 3/7 taunt double the taunts health to 3/14 then add equal dmg to its Health. And the other class kills it in the next turn.
Now: Hold the 5 mana card in your hand, cast 3 spell while holding it, wait for turn 9 to have enough mana to play it in one turn, play the 5 mana chose the 3 mana colossal card and spend the 1 mana colossal minion to play it, and to get a RANDOM colossal.
Too much impulse and almost any good outcome.
Player doesn’t feel rewarded.
You have to stick to meta decks rather than playing some fun decks.
People usually won by one card per game. One card that you can’t counter and somehow it gets too strong, or it’s just completely unbalanced.

TLDR: Luck based game. You will rage when you do combos and the other player just wins by playing a broken card in a good time 💁🏻♂️
For the record I’m still gonna play it till I lose my remaining hair/sanity.
But I rather swim in lava than play todays Heartstone.
Lot of great names left this game: Firebat, Amaz etc.
