Good but be careful
Does Zoya Shariah-Compliant means it is halal??
Be careful. Zoya follows AAOFI standards. And AAOFI standards itself is questionable.
1- Many muslims don’t know that AAOFI standards allow max 30% interest paying debt. This percentage has no strong basis in shariah.
2- In Zoya app, companies with 5% max prohibited income( e.g. interest income or non halal business income) are screened as shariah-compliant. This is AAOFI standard. However, this percentage also does not have strong shariah basis.
Pros:
I appreciate the Zoya initiative as it has made shariah-compliant stocks screening easier. Specially it helps quickly filter out the non compliant stocks.
Cons:
-Needs more frequent updates on the compliances. For example, I was checking the MNST stock in Zoya today on 25th February.
It was showing some prohibited income percentage which was not matching my data that I collected from yahoo finance. So I opened the details. Found out that Zoya was using previous year’s data.
As the company financials and business activities keep changing. The shariah-compliance screening should be also done as soon as the data are available.
Future improvement idea:
Categories of compliance can be created. A second layer of compliance screening can be applied. This screening would put least debt companies and almost no prohibited income generating companies on top.
