Burn up! My Cosmo!

The famous Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac series was created in the 1980s – considered to be a golden age of manga. In this universe, the Saints are warriors who fight to defend the goddess Athena. Wearing sacred armour named after 88 constellations, these warriors are so mighty that heaven and earth shake in their path. To unleash their powers, they must burn inner cosmic energy (Cosmo), while their armour (Cloths) protects their mortal bodies from damage.

Saint Seiya’s unique and striking aesthetic quality is thanks to the series author, who used Greek mythology as inspiration for the Saints’ outfits and combat moves. This stellar visual style, replicated in the role-playing game Saint Seiya: Awakening, propels this imaginary world to life and is at its most impressive when the special attack moves of every Saint are on display.

The game’s protagonist Seiya unleashes his signature move, Pegasus Meteor Fist, by invoking the Pegasus constellation and firing punches at supersonic speed. And when Seiya’s Cosmo awakens, his fists move beyond the speed of light.

Other Saints’ have powers that are a marvel to behold, and take their inspiration from other cultures. Seiya’s battle brother Shiryu possesses the Rising Dragon Punch, which manifests as a Chinese dragon.

Shaka, one of the strongest warriors amongst the 12 legendary Gold Saints, has Buddhist-inspired abilities such as Treasures of Heavens and Purifying Light. This almost-godly hero always carries prayer beads, and his name is derived from Shakya, the clan of Siddharta Gautama.

The massive Saint Seiya universe may seem daunting to newcomers, but Awakening is an ideal entry point to this fabled series. With the game’s main and side stories, you’ll be taken through all the key moments of the original storyline, and the extensive line-up of over 70 characters is still being updated to include even more. Thanks to the AR feature in the game’s Codex, you can even summon your favourite Saint into the real world.

Even with the help of Cloths and their goddess, the Saints must still be ready to sacrifice their lives when faced with almost invincible enemies, before finally emerging triumphant to face the next battle. You know these heroes will always win but, still, it feels like a rollercoaster thanks to every plot twist. Soon, you’ll find yourself cheering “Burn! Cosmo!” too.
