Good app but doesn’t delete gracefully

For a recent trip to Ottawa I downloaded the Air Canada app. I don’t have any complaints about the app itself - it’s solid. But after the trip I deleted the app and to my surprise my GPS / location remained active. The little arrow in the top left hand of my phone was constantly on. And to my surprise my iPhone said it was the Air Canada app I had deleted! How is that possible? What did the app leave behind? Only a fresh iOS install could solve the problem.

Hello, thank you for your feedback. We take your privacy seriously, and would like to review with you how iOS reports location usage, or usage of any other of the device’s sensors such as the camera or microphone.

First and foremost, the Air Canada app’s location permissions are limited to while the app is running in the foreground. The app does not request permission to use your location when it’s not running, nor does iOS allow that to happen without receiving permission from the user.

The location permission (or any other app permission) can be disabled from the iOS Settings app at any time from the Privacy section. Furthermore, after the app is removed from the device, nothing remains that would be able to use any of the device’s sensors.

What we suspect you’ve observed is the fact that iOS lists apps that have recently used your location, camera, or microphone - even if you are not actively using the app, or shortly after deleting the app.

Assuming you are using iOS 16: For example, you can ask Siri a request (which uses the microphone). After you’re done your interaction with Siri, open your device’s Control Center. You will notice at the top of the screen, iOS will indicate that your microphone was recently used, even though Siri is no longer actively listening.

Similarly, you can launch your Camera app and then close it. Check again in your device’s Control Center, and you’ll see that the camera and microphone was recently used by the Camera app, even though the Camera app is no longer open.

Last but not least, Air Canada doesn’t control the deletion process of apps. That’s entirely managed by iOS. We’re confident that Apple removes apps in their entirety when a customer chooses to remove an app.

The app is well done but not functional since the last update

Idk what happened to this app but it was working perfectly and now it crashes every time I try to book a flight. Deleted for now.

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We’re sorry that you’re experiencing issues with the app while booking.

Every 3-4 weeks, we release updates to the app with new features, stability and performance improvements, and bug fixes. Looking at our app performance for v5.29.2, we’re within normal and expected crash-free rates, but check back soon for an update.

In the meantime, we would like to investigate this issue and prioritize it. At your earliest convenience, please let us know your device and iOS version, as well as any details of your booking search, like the departure and arrival airport, travel dates, flights and fares selected.
