Description

Boatie is an invaluable source of information for all who enjoy recreational boating in UK and Irish coastal waters. Developed and used by a keen sailor, after 14 years it remains the popular choice and 'go-to' app of thousands.

Features:
• 'Port' display for approx. 750 primary and secondary ports from the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and the Republic of Ireland. This gives you a tide table for the next 7 days, along with a meteogram of 3 hourly weather forecasts and daylight times, position relative to closest springs or neaps and moon phase. For 648 ports, there is a tidal curve prediction for the current day. Both are extendable up to 10 days with the 'Standard' subscription. With the curves you can see the height predicted for any time - or vice versa (default behaviour configurable in Settings) and optionally a curve adjusted for barometric pressure.

• View Tide Tables in a standard format, and with the 'Premium' subscription retrieve up to 12 months of data (where available) for a port.

• Tidal Streams for up to 10 days (more than 7 days requires the 'Standard' subscription). Pan and zoom the map to show your preferred area, and scroll along the time. Touch and hold to see the forecasted set and drift. This data covers the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and the Republic of Ireland.

• Marine Forecasts:
- the current UK Inshore and Shipping forecasts, and synoptic charts for Northern Atlantic and NW Europe.
- the current Irish Sea Area Forecast and Coastal Report.

• Navigation:
- display your current GPS position, speed-over-ground (SOG), course-over-ground (COG), plus distance and heading to user-configurable waypoints.
- Waypoints can be imported or exported as GPX files and ordered within the file to allow quick switching to the next waypoint.
- A built-in compass shows the direction to the current waypoint.
- A navigation view to display the contents of a selected waypoint file plotted on a map. Create a track to a waypoint and calculate cross track error (XTE) with heading correction plus Velocity Made Good. (not available with 'Basic' subscription).
- The Navigation Chart page now displays nautical chart data

- **Experimental Features**
- Navigation Narration - with a waypoint target set, Boatie can now narrate key navigation data such as BTW, SOG, COG, VMG-C, Heading, DTW and XTE. Useful when needing to use Boatie ‘hands-free’. (not available with 'Basic' subscription)

• Reference: a useful set of information easily to hand whether you're out on the water or doing your theory course. It currently includes:
- Day shapes
- Navigation lights
- Sound signals
- Beaufort scale
- Forecast terminology
- UK Inshore forecast areas map
- ROE Marine Weather Services Map
- Signal flags, phonetic alphabet & morse code
- VHF Channel usage plus emergency radio protocols

What’s New

Version 5.11.7

It's been a busy few months since the last release but I hope you'll find the updates worth it.

- If you have a Standard or Premium subscription you now have more control over your recent ports list by being able to select 'favourites'. For Premium subscribers, there is no longer a 5 port limit, you can remove items from the list easily and favourite ports include tide, astronomical and weather info displays right on the main menu
- Premium users can now easily create a waypoint to a port using the port list as a template.
- .gpx files have been moved into an iCloud Drive folder enabling easy synchronisation between your devices.
- Waypoints can now be created directly on the chart view (Standard and Premium) making it much easier to set up a new route. Waypoints can be directed to a new file, the currently open file or any other file from your folder.
- The display of nautical chart data is no longer experimental and will now show by default.
- You can now choose to have the tidal heigh/time line track the forecast barometric pressure adjusted tidal curve. Find the option on the settings page.

The usage tips have been reviewed and updated, so make sure you check these out for guidance on the new features.

In addition there have been loads of background updates, performance enhancements and bug fixes in readiness for the next exciting feature release coming in March!

v5.11.7 has additional bug fixes and addresses a minor display issue if the device OS is set to display AM/PM time format.

I've had many great requests for new features over the winter (some of which made it into this version). So, if there's something you'd like to see, email me at support@msswsolutions.com

Swiss Knife for navigators

Boatie brings together in one app lots of vital data for the cruising sailor: weather, synoptic charts, tidal heights and streams and even GPS data. I would warmly recommend it to all boaties!

I have found an awkward problem with you otherwise excellent tidal app. TIME! I looked for a way to give this feedback to the programmer but the only option is via a review.

Currently I am in Spain (UTC+2) but am planning a sailing trip for my return to Ireland (UTC+1). My phone is set to set its clock automatically to local time and this works well. The trouble is that when I look at the tide time in your app I have no way of knowing if it is showing the time in the location I have chosen (DUBLIN) or the time here.

I know from a paper chart for Dover that HW yesterday was 17:13 UTC. That would translate as 18:13 in Ireland and 19:13 here.

However, your app gives Dublin tide as 18:01 (Dublin tides are close to Dover tides) if I turn off daylight saving and 20:01 if I turn on daylight saving.

The solution? Simple, always show the time zone as in “17:00 UTC” OR have a setting to always show the time in UTC.

You will appreciate that an error of even one hour could create dangerous situations. This problem is not limited to tidal apps as it also affects calendar apps in general.

To give a time without reference to zone is like giving a distance without saying whether it is kilometres, miles, inches or whatever.
