Could easily be a lot better
This app is not good. It’s clunky and slow to use. It doesn’t feel like other apps and doesn’t behave as expected because it is poorly designed.
Some constructive suggestions: make the iPad app not simply a scaled up version of the iPhone app. The text is ridiculously big and it barely fits any content on my iPad’s massive screen. The app is also only able to be used in portrait for some reason. Also make it go back when you swipe right like most other apps.
This is frustrating enough of an experience to use that I’m considering just not reading the Irish Times, which is unfortunate.
Great journalism let down by pathetic app
Using this app is an exercise in patience trying. It’s a dedicated iPad app that can only be viewed in portrait orientation. In fact, it can only be used in one direction in portrait mode. Cue regular rotation, flipping and twisting your device, just to ensure Miriam Lord is not standing on her head.
There’s no dark mode, because obviously white to black and black to white is just too hard, so if you happen to be reading in anything other than direct sunlight, prepared to be dazzled. Just not in a good way.
You get almost no benefits as a subscriber. The app obviously should be the way to add those elements of difference that could make the subscription more enticing. Not for the IT that type hierarchical exclusion though, they save that type of shenanigans for the property pages.
It all just begs the question, what is the point of even having an app if this is the cursory effort you can come up with? Take a look at The Examiner or The Guardian for how to deliver a decent user experience in a news app.
This is a decent app, but not up to the standard of others.
I like a lot about this app - swiping through articles is easy and intuitive, and it loads very quickly. There are some things that I feel should be changed quickly…
It would be great for links to open in the app instead of the website - most other news apps accomplish this.
Also, the iPad app should be different than just a scaled up version of the iPhone app. There should be a sidebar for navigation, and also the ability to complete the crossword in the app.
It would be nice to have a news widget now that in iOS 14 they can be placed on the Home Screen.
When we are paying €12 per month (at least) these are things that should be included in the service
