This is a decent app, but not up to the standard of others.

I like a lot about this app - swiping through articles is easy and intuitive, and it loads very quickly. There are some things that I feel should be changed quickly…
It would be great for links to open in the app instead of the website - most other news apps accomplish this.
Also, the iPad app should be different than just a scaled up version of the iPhone app. There should be a sidebar for navigation, and also the ability to complete the crossword in the app.
It would be nice to have a news widget now that in iOS 14 they can be placed on the Home Screen.
When we are paying €12 per month (at least) these are things that should be included in the service

Great journalism let down by pathetic app

Using this app is an exercise in patience trying. It’s a dedicated iPad app that can only be viewed in portrait orientation. In fact, it can only be used in one direction in portrait mode. Cue regular rotation, flipping and twisting your device, just to ensure Miriam Lord is not standing on her head.
There’s no dark mode, because obviously white to black and black to white is just too hard, so if you happen to be reading in anything other than direct sunlight, prepared to be dazzled. Just not in a good way.
You get almost no benefits as a subscriber. The app obviously should be the way to add those elements of difference that could make the subscription more enticing. Not for the IT that type hierarchical exclusion though, they save that type of shenanigans for the property pages.
It all just begs the question, what is the point of even having an app if this is the cursory effort you can come up with? Take a look at The Examiner or The Guardian for how to deliver a decent user experience in a news app.

Content great but interaction design could be better

I use this app everyday. The content & journalism is of a high calibre. The app design lets the content down however as the navigation and interaction options are limited. The lack of a basic search function confounds me. Why? The horizontal top nav is clunky to use. It would greatly benefit from a complete information and interaction design update. I would still recommend it as one of the best sources of reliable news and opinions with an Irish flavor.
