Shredder, the most successful chess program ever, is now also available for the iPhone. You can play against Shredder, analyze with him and solve chess puzzles. It offers the usual Shredder standard for your pocket.
In addition to the outstanding playing strength of the 12 times computer chess world champion, Shredder is also able to mimic the play of a human chess player with any playing strength. He even deliberately makes typical human mistakes in those levels.
Solve 1000 built in chess puzzles. Shredder keeps track of your performance and offers advice if needed.
You can adjust Shredder’s playing strength from beginner to master level. If you like, Shredder automatically adjusts his strength to yours. He even calculates an Elo rating for you. This is how the playing strength of chess players is typically measured.
During the game a coach is watching your moves and warns you if you are about to make a mistake.

Worth the money
Worth a fiver, but the full version doesn’t really add much. You can choose between five playing styles which helps mix things up a bit. I only upgraded cuz I got about 1,000 hours out of the free version and felt it was only fair to give em something ...
Especially good for beginners
I knew the basic moves before, but this app has opened up learning the game for me. Very easy to use, good look, great features. The puzzles are a brilliant way to learn how to think in chess, how to look for all options on the board before making a move. The built in learning coach and promoter is incredibly helpful in playing games, showing you possible moves, rating your progress. The app pitches itself at your level so you always have a good chance of winning unlike some games which are pitched too high on difficulty. The built in database of opening moves is great for trying out and learning those important first moves. All in all a lovely and great, easy to use and helpful, fun way to learn chess.
Shredder for iPhone is not so strong
Interface is not so friendly, tapping is not supported, you have to drag the piece, there are better GUI out there, however the Elo level adjustment is good, so far it is only available in Shredder program. Puzzles are nice as well, a bit weak though. The best feature of this program it can adjust to your strength level, however if you are a strong player, the program is not well optimized for iPhone, there are no time settings (you cannot chose 15 min per game, only Elo level). At the maximum level of 2400 Elo the program is not so strong. Shredder can do better program, at this price point at least!
Here is the game of Glaurung Chess (15 min per game, aggressive style, level 100) played with white against recently released Shredder for iPhone, (put on maximum setting of 2400 ELO, aggressive style):
