Review

I remember the Manchester Guardian plopping through the letterbox in my parents house in Dublin on the sea. I may not have quite appreciated it in those days but rediscovered the joys of its Sunday edition - the Observer. We rechristened it The Absorber. When our copy is collected from our
local shop, the tug of war starts! ‘I just want to read Will Hutton!’ ‘Rawnsley is always excellent on the political mood-it’ll only take me a minute’ ‘You can’t read the whole paper at once!’ Once that’s out of the way, with a good coffee, on the couch, Roland our Jack/Dasc in his bed by the stove-Silence descends. Strictly no talking except to recommend an article! I think you can safely say - we love it! Sue Prickett

I subscribe but unimpressed by repetitive website

Firstly, I concur with the Guardian’s diverse and balanced coverage of events. Whilst horrified by unfolding events in Ukraine, it would be helpful and less depressing if newsfeed sequences were rotated regularly, with more “light-relief” subject-matter interspersed with hard-hitting content. We’re just emerging from a pandemic, to be hit by a war, then rising interest rates, winter, an energy crisis and most-likely poverty for many people.

Articles with cheerful human-interest stories, interesting food, affordable exhibitions, scenic winter walks, affordable decorations, any good news re: enhanced decarbonisation due to energy crisis..or basically any silver-lining newsfeeds would be appreciated.

People’s mental health will be dented over winter. Please through happy photos etc try to enhance wellbeing.

We lived and worked in SW London for 9 years, and loved its diversity. That is when I started reading the Guardian. Now living in Ireland, I subscribe to the Irish Examiner- A Cork- based newspaper. Wondering if you could exchange/ share international content with good media outlets like it and Irish Times. Could it benefit both parties’ production costs, and diversity of content?

Your content can be excellent, but interested in the UK political scene & lived experience at in the UK or COP27 rather than blanket coverage of bombs landing in Ukraine or glacially slow progress of US midterms.

Many thanks,

Una Merriman
