A great reboot

Visually this game is amazing and it really feels like an open world. It has some button mashing elements, such as when you’re struggling with an enemy, and some cases where it feels like playing whack-a-mole when prompted “press F to defend”. They’re a relatively small and easily mastered part of the game. The controls are generally good, and playable on a keyboard and trackpad, but in same instances it becomes a bit of a mad dash to find a very situational button. I’ve had quite a few deaths through not knowing which key I should be pressing at that precise time: E, F, who knows?

The RPG elements, like using experience to develop skills and salvaging to improve your weapson, work well. You can pretty much play this game without first reading the manual, as it does a good job of introducing Lara’s abilities. Movement animation is dynamic, where Lara will take over in places to pass an obstacle, and it’s done well enough to feel as if this is a real human.

They have a good balance of puzzles and fast action, and the player can go back to explore older areas to look for secrets and other things they missed. It’s also possible to grind for experience and salvage, which can be handy for players who want to max-out their character. There’s no need for people to do this if they prefer to simply play through the game.

The game uses save points rather than allowing the player to save at any time, but the save points are pretty well judged. If you die, then chances are you’re not having to travel much to return to the point at which you died.

It’s a great port and it perform brilliantly on my late 2013 MacBook Pro with a 750M GPU. I’ve had very little lag, and normally that’s occured during cut scenes and not during action. I can’t see anything negative to highlight about this game.
