Having inherited a pair of legendary – and very large – gauntlets from her missing dad, young Gully has a lot to live up to. But the spirited star of Battle Chasers: Nightwar doesn’t back down from a challenge, even if it means tussling with legions of nefarious beasts.
Based on the Battle Chasers comics from the late ’90s, this gorgeous role-playing game features an unforgettable cast of steampunk characters and brilliant turn-based combat.
Gully is joined by a charismatic squad of playable pals: crotchety mage Knolan, noble war golem Calibretto, sneaky rogue Red Monika, and solemn swordsman Garrison. They may be Gully’s defenders, but she’s the glue that keeps them together as they try to escape this treacherous island.
To succeed will require traversing a sprawling map and slaying all manner of monsters, from undead archers to bomb-wielding werewolves – with plenty of downtime for crafting, fishing and witty banter.
Levelling up heroes unlocks a staggering number of abilities and perks that make every turn-based fight feel fresh. Standard attacks, like Garrison’s Swift Strike, happen immediately, while Calibretto’s multi-hit Obliterate barrage takes time to charge up. Experimenting with different tactics is just as fun as pocketing your hard-earned loot.
From the magnificent animations to the snappy script delivered by a dazzling voice cast, Battle Chasers: Nightwar does justice to its comic book roots. So join the adventure – and go make Dad proud.
