The rhythm really is going to get you in this thrillingly tense isometric platformer. In Vectronom, you must swipe to guide a cube through a series of perilous stages, while trying to match your moves to the beat of a pulsing soundtrack.

Each of these minimalistic levels feels like stepping onto a crowded dancefloor. The background flashes between bright colours as though you’re playing under disco lights while you work out when and where to move.

At first, getting to the exit isn’t taxing, but soon you’ll have to negotiate spikes that protrude from the floor on every fourth beat. You’ll bide your time, counting out the rhythm and maybe even nodding your head or tapping your feet to stay in tempo.

Spikes will shift at frightening speed, keeping you on your toes.

But after a while you can’t afford to hang about. Those spikes will move around as if giving chase. In other levels, the floor will drop from beneath you if you stand still.

Elsewhere, platforms steadily move forward, forcing you to keep time to stay aboard them. Another slows things down while gaps swap with solid ground.

It’s all about finding your groove and memorising your steps – like mastering a musical instrument, or learning a new dance. A sobering post-level stats screen tells you how many times you failed before getting it right. But it’s tinged with delight when you get a high “beat precision” rating.

With pickups to gobble up en route to the finish, you’ll want to replay each stage until you’ve achieved beat-matching mastery. It might take time, but Vectronom makes the pursuit of perfection truly rewarding.
