It is clear from the data that incumbent “social” media platforms are no longer social. Despite being more connected than any time in human history, 73% of Gen Z admit to feeling alone either sometimes or always—the most of any generation ever.

This strange phenomenon is largely due to the fact that the “social” platforms of today have become so obsessed with pushing never-ending media onto users, that they have disregarded the notion of connecting people.

Moreover, due to significant changes in urban planning—namely the push to move inhabitants away from tight-knit cities towards the sprawling suburbs—traditional Third Places (local pubs, community centres, cafes, parks) have become practically obsolete as a means of consistent socialisation.

These changes are, for the most part, irreversible.

It is highly unlikely that the current “social” platforms, so reliant on advertising revenues, will reverse their direction and seek to serve the people they represent more meaningfully. Similarly, bringing traditional Third Places back to life would involve the restructuring of entire cities and surrounding areas—a tremendously expensive and time-consuming task.
