Description

The Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway runs 13 1⁄2 miles (21.7 km) from the Cinque Port of Hythe to windswept Dungeness.

This audio commentary – different in each direction - tells you something of the general history of the railway from its opening in 1927 to the present day, as well as notes on the stations, villages, towns and countryside you are travelling through, including some of the holiday camps. The formation of the Dungeness headland is described, as are the acoustic mirrors or ‘listening ears’ located close by. There is mention of the late Derek Jarman’s house and garden, visible from the line, as well as lighthouses and their history. Flora and fauna are described, including the ‘pioneer plants’ of Dungeness, and some details are given of the various uses made of the railway in the Second World War. This audio guide is suitable for all ages, being both informative and entertaining.

This app makes use of GPS to show you places of interest close to your current location. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
