Description

NOT JUST ANOTHER MEDITATION APP
Don’t think of Waking Up as a conventional meditation app—think of it as a new operating system for your mind, and a guide to living a better life.

We aim to offer a far deeper approach to mindfulness than you’ll find elsewhere—one that fundamentally transforms how you see yourself, and the world around you.

But you’ll also discover life-changing, secular wisdom from top scholars and experts, on everything from sleep and doing good in the world to time management and happiness.

Waking Up is free for anyone who can’t afford it. We never want money to be the reason why someone can’t benefit from what we’ve built.

***Created by Sam Harris
Sam Harris, neuroscientist and best-selling author, built Waking Up to be the resource he wished he’d had when he began exploring meditation over 30 years ago.

Sam only includes those practices and insights he’s found to be utterly life-changing. The same is true for the many teachers, scholars, and experts you’ll meet throughout the app.

***A step-by-step approach to mindfulness
We’ve heard from thousands of members who say they never really understood meditation until they took our 28-part Introductory Course.

Whether you’re a beginner or advanced practitioner, you’ll dive straight into the deep end of real mindfulness, so you don’t waste any time on the surface.

***Learn the true purpose of meditation
Meditation is about more than just relieving stress, sleeping better, or improving your focus. While it can help you do all of that, our goal is ultimately to help you open the door to a deeper understanding of yourself.

***A place for serious seekers
Explore some of life’s most important questions, on topics like neuroscience, psychedelics, enlightenment, ethics, and Stoicism—from renowned authors and professors like Oliver Burkeman, Michael Pollan, Laurie Santos, Arthur C. Brooks, James Clear, and others.

***In-depth theory and practice
Waking Up explains both the theory and the practice of meditation —so you don’t just learn the “how” of mindfulness, but also the “why.”

You’ll be guided by prominent figures like Joseph Goldstein, Diana Winston, Adyashanti, Jayasāra, and Henry Shukman, who teach a wide range of contemplative practices, including Vipassana, Zen, Dzogchen, Advaita Vedanta, and more.

***Timeless insights, modern lens
Within Waking Up, you’ll find some of the most profound spiritual teachings from throughout history—those that have stood the test of time. And you’ll hear from historic voices like Alan Watts.

But we also pressure-test ancient wisdom against modern science, so you won’t find outlandish claims or anything we haven’t found to be empirically true.

***A comprehensive guide
Waking Up supports your growth and development in a number of different ways. You’ll find an abundance of useful features, like meditation timers, in-app support messages, an ever-growing audio library, and daily reminders to help bring your mindfulness practice into your life—plus, Waking Up allows you to save all of your meditation sessions to your Apple Health app.

“Waking Up is, hands down, the most important meditation guide I’ve ever used.” Physician Peter Attia

“If you’ve had trouble getting into meditation, this app is your answer!” -Susan Cain, best-selling author

“Waking Up is not an app, it’s a path. It is equal parts a meditation guide, a philosophy master-class and a highly-focused TED Conference.” -Eric Hirschberg, former CEO of ACTIVISION

Bir Bains ,

Thank you for being awesome Sam.

I’ve been using this app diligently for over 2 years now, and my understanding of what it truly means to inquire into the nature of consciousness, my psychological resilience to withstand difficult times, or the capacity to be completely immersed in the present moment and my general attitude towards life itself, has undergone a tremendous change. Your style of teaching and laying emphasis on the need to dissolve the boundaries between formal practice and moments of everyday wakeful life, has been extremely useful. The difference between how I used to live moment to moment back then, versus how I can now, is total. I mean I can genuinely not emphasise enough how beneficial this process has been for me. To be able to understand not just at the conceptual level, but to actually be able to discover experientially that- ‘there is no me’, something that felt so obvious and central to who I thought I was, has been the single most insightful skill that I’ve ever learnt in my life. It truly has been a transformative firmware upgrade of my mind Sam, and I have you to thank for it. I thank you and Annika for creating this indispensable resource, that the world would surely need a lot more, in the times to come.

A Step ahead of other meditation apps

Wholeheartedly recommend this. I have had my run-ins with other mindfulness apps but they always ended up pulling their punches well in advance of clear insight. Just 10-15 minutes of your time everyday (supplemented with the occasional lesson when you feel like it) and you are on your way to not only understanding how your mind is working more clearly, but also developing other habits that you have always wanted to. It is honestly indispensable to my daily functioning right now and I can sense it seeping into other aspects of my daily life. I have been a supporter of Sam Harris’s Waking Up podcast for a while but I have tried to be as objective as possible about forming my opinion about this app. It worked for me and there’s a really good chance that it might work for you as well, provided you put in the bare minimum of effort and discipline, simply because he doesn’t preach or talk down to you. He gives you the tools to inspect your mind yourself as clearly and earnestly as you can.

Best among them

I love this app. I have been trying many different apps to learn meditation and to make it a daily habit. I found the step-wise lessons with its gradual approach by Sam the best suited for me. There are no grand promises, but only some pointers and guidance on how best to do it and what we can realistically expect when we practice mindfulness. The short theory episodes helps us to understand the concepts and hints to keep progressing in our journey towards “an examined life”. I have been recommending this app to many of my friends. You cant go wrong with this.

Latest update on Janaury 13, 2022 - this continues to be my preferred app for meditation. Sam’s way of slowly nudging to improve is still the best that I have seen so far. Although i use the app mainly for guided meditation, i find the other articles and features like moment also help me in my journey towards being a better life.
