In iOS 14 and iPadOS 14, widgets have been totally redesigned to give you more information at a glance. And now you can add them to your Home Screen and to iPad’s Today View, right alongside your apps. Here are a few of our favourites.

Carrot Weather
Like its namesake app, the Carrot widget delivers the weather with a little more… personality. (“Beep boop. It’s 83 degrees and mostly moony in Miami right now, meatbag.” That’s right: Carrot Weather refers to humans as “meatbags”.) If you’re looking for a daily dose of meteorological sarcasm, humour and even the occasional insult, it’s a must-add.

Wikipedia
Who knew encyclopedias could be such fun? Wikipedia offers three widgets: Picture of the Day bubbles up photos of everything from sea snails and asteroids to illustrations for Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven”. On This Day recaps moments in history. And Top Read highlights the day’s most popular story, so you can see what the whole world is learning about.

Calm
Add a little serenity into your day, or get help settling into slumber. Calm’s widget gives you one-tap access to the Daily Calm (a 10-minute guided meditation), breathing exercises to help you unwind and snooze-inducing Sleep Stories.

Brief
The just-the-facts news app delivers a handy Front Page widget with the day’s top headlines.

LookUp
Elevate your linguistic proficiency with this dictionary app’s beautifully illustrated Word of the Day. Then test those high-school English skills with a series of word quizzes.
