Description

Take a look into the publicly inaccessible archaeological areas under Prague Castle

More than 150 years of archaeological research at Prague Castle has left behind not only dozens of publications and a completely new view of the history of this important place, but also a large number of monuments that are still preserved in many places on the castle grounds.
Fragments of older buildings and terrains map the Castle's complex structural development, some have become part of accessible archaeological sites, others remain hidden from the public.
Among the largest and most famous are the area under St. Vitus Cathedral and the so-called Small and Large Excavations in the Third Courtyard, which are among the oldest excavated areas and were originally intended for visitors. Later, the excavation areas of other important buildings were created:
the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, the Basilica and Monastery of St. George and the Old Royal Palace.
In addition to the above-mentioned significant monuments presented in this application, there are hidden in various parts of the castle evidence of mainly older phases of fortification, which were never intended to be presented and a large part of which is not accessible today.
