Dictionary Universal is iPhone, iPod touch and iPad application for viewing StarDict dictionaries and dictionaries in Lingvo DSL format ¹. Many of these dictionaries are available on the Internet for free ².

Features:
* Very fast. After dictionary is indexed, minimal time is required to start before you can type text. List of matches appears without delay while you type.
* Supports morphology for English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
* Fuzzy search. This functionality will help you find words if they are misspelled or when you don't know how to type word correctly. Just type in the text and hit Search button on the keyboard.
* Pronunciation support.
* Searching text in currently displayed article.
* Profiles group dictionaries, pronunciation and morphology for quick switching. Useful if you work with several languages.
* Favorites and Search History.
* Ability to lookup word in clipboard when switching to the application. Copy word to clipboard and switch to Dictionary Universal to see translation.
* Most complete StarDict format support in the AppStore (including images, synonyms, and various dictionary formats).
* Color highlighting for better text readability (when supported by dictionary format).
* Arbitrary word lookup. Tap any word in article to lookup it in loaded dictionaries.
*Full screen mode support.
*Multitouch gestures support:
- swipe horizontally to switch between dictionaries;
- swipe with two fingers from left to right for navigating to previous article;
- tap with two fingers to toggle full screen mode.
* Compressed dictionaries and resources support.
* Embedded web browser for downloading dictionaries from the Internet.
* Multitasking and iTunes File Sharing.

¹ Lingvo DSL format is a text format with dictionary source code. Dictionary Universal does not support compiled Lingvo dictionaries (LSD format).

GREAT FOR LANGUAGE STUDENTS/LINGUISTS!!

What I am writing will sound pretty nerdy/obscure for many folks but it’s about dictionaries, odd IT projects and quirky software. So those into it will know what I mean ;)

StarDict was a dictionary software allowing people to turn cd-rom dictionaries into smaller dictionaries/files without the need to install the dictionary cd-rom/software. The project seems to be defunct but there are still hundreds of free dictionaries on the internet compressed in that format…….but the problem is that you need to find a client to read them. This app is THE SOLUTION.

LOOK NO FURTHER! THIS APP IS A NO BRAINER!! This was the app I’ve been looking for for such a long time.

Once you have downloaded the StarDict dictionaries (in .tar.bz2 format, you’ll find them on the internet), you can easily install them on your iPhone/iPad!

THIS APP IS WORTH ITS COST. It’s not cheap, I’d say it’s pretty/very expensive but it is worth the money. There are some free or cheaper alternatives on the App Store but the experience is not so good.

To summarize:

You can install your dictionaries from your iCloud Drive (provided you have downloaded the .tar.bz2 previously): no need to plug your device for the iTunes File Sharing function
Once they are installed and indexed, the app is SUPER FAST
You can add “profiles” per each language (useful if you have many dictionaries and speak many languages and want to group your dictionaries per spoken language)
You can BOOKMARK YOUR FAVORITE WORDS (useful to create your own dictionary): the other apps on the App Store do not have this function or, if they do, it is very bad
The text formatting of the dictionaries is perfect, exactly the same as the original cd-rom versions
IT SUPPORTS IMAGES!!!!! Again, it’s like having plugged a dictionary cd-rom into your iPhone/iPad with ALL THE FUNCTIONALITIES of such dictionaries
And it also has an embedded web browser for downloading dictionaries from the Internet (you must paste the web address of the dictionary).
Having/using this app (after you have downloaded the dictionaries you need) is like HAVING INSIDE JUST ONE APP LOTS OF DICTIONARIES using much less device space than installing the dictionaries dedicated app (the StarDict format is very compressed).

THIS HAS HELPED ME SAVING GIGA BYTES OF SPACE AND EVENTUALLY HAVING LOTS OF DICTIONARIES INSIDE ONE SINGLE APP.
