Sleep Cycle - Sleep Tracker
Sounds, Stories & Smart Alarm
How much sleep do you get per night? If, like us, the first thing that popped into your head was ‘not enough’, those recommended eight nightly hours probably seem like a far-off fantasy.
Because we all wish we were enjoying a bit more sleep, it’s easy to convince ourselves that we’re not getting enough. But how do your hours in the land of nod stack up against everyone else? Well, thanks to Sleep Cycle, we can now see.
With almost a million of the sleep tracking app’s users having opted to share their daily sleep stats, it’s possible to see how you compare with the rest of the world when it comes to catching 40 winks. Or should that be 34 winks?
Globally, in 2019, the average amount of time spent in bed per night clocked in at a surprisingly low seven hours, 12 minutes. And interestingly, how much sleep you get varies greatly depending on your age, where you’re from and even your gender.
In every country around the world women sleep more, spending an average of seven hours and 23 minutes in bed per night. That’s 20 minutes more per night than men.
Despite spending less time asleep, with later bedtimes and earlier wake up times, Sleep Cycle’s data shows that men tend to wake up happier than their female counterparts. Using the app to record their mood first thing in the morning, men reported waking up happy 59%, three per cent higher than for women.
Statistically, you’re likely to get the least amount of sleep when you’re in your 40s, with nightly averages dropping to just over seven hours. But if you’re in your 20s, congratulations – this is the most sleep you’re ever going to get.
Want to see exactly how you stack up to these averages? With Sleep Cycle, simply leave your iPhone on your nightstand in the evening and the app will intelligently track your sleep throughout the night before waking you at the optimal point in the morning.
And because sleep quality is as important as how much time you spend in the land of nod, the app will even tell you how long you spend in restorative deep sleep. Now if you'll excuse us, we’ve got some sleep to catch up on.
