Description

FaultKin Mobile is designed to help you collect, visualize, and analyze fault slip data on the go. It is a companion to my FaultKin program for desktop computers, but it can also be used to measure faults on the outcrop. The app has the following features:

- Provide automatic data entry as a geologist's compass by reading the iOS device orientation and converting it to strike and dip of planes and/or trend and plunge of lines.

- Provide manual data entry via either tapping and dragging on the stereonet or by typing values into text fields.

- Groups of faults can be assigned different tags. You will probably want to do this based on location or other criteria. For example, you may want to have a tag labeled "Corral Quemado-Older" and anther "Corral Quemado-Younger".

- Carry out basic calculations such as: rotations about any axis, unfolding faults around local bedding, or measure angles between lines and between planes.

- Plot P and T axes, (unweighted) moment tensor axes, P-T dihedra, fault plane solutions, and contour P and T axes.

- View the plots from any orientation, not just looking straight down into the lower hemisphere

- Stamp each entry with time date and, if enabled by the user, location. See the location of a datum in the iOS Maps program

- Provide basic input and output of data using standard iOS conventions

- Work on both iPhones or iPads, both in portrait mode only.

The desktop version of FaultKin will soon be updated so that it can read and write FaultKin Mobile files, which are simple tab separated text files.

Use it at your own risk. In particular, recall that your iOS device is very sensitive to magnetic fields and the compass bearings can easily be off by 10-20°! This program should not be used as a sole source of navigation data. The author assumes no responsibility for incorrect results, unanticipated behaviors, loss resulting from results provided by the program, or any other anticipated or unanticipated event related to the program.

What’s New

Version 3.0.0

V. 3.0.0 -- 12 March 2024

This version of FaultKin Mobile (FKM) has been substantially rewritten and modernized with new functionality and data reliability. Major changes include:

• FKM now keeps your data for each project in a separate Sqlite database, an open database format. The first time you run the new app, FKM will automatically import your data into the new format. For the utmost in data security, prior to updating you may want to send your existing data to yourself using the sharing panel in the Data Screen. The next version of FaultKin desktop will be able to import FKM database files.

• Your data are now saved automatically (both individual measurements and complete projects). You no longer have to save them manually. In the Datum Details screen, the Save button in the old version has now been replaced by a Revert button. If you make changes to a datum in that screen, those changes will automatically update the database UNLESS you tap the revert button. Projects remain active until you open or create a new project. When you create a new project, you will be given the opportunity to transfer all existing data into the new project. Prior to creating a project, your observations are kept in a Random Obs database.

• Your data are now accessible from the Files App on your iPhone or iPad. From there you can easily share the database using iCloud Drive, AirDrop, or other Apple sharing technologies. You can also delete files that you no longer need but, be careful, once they are gone you will not be able to retrieve them again unless you have copied the files to your desktop/laptop.

• The interface has been modernized and rearranged to match the interface of Stereonet Mobile with buttons performing the same function now located in the same places.

• The export button on the Main Screen (with the stereonet view) will now enable you to share a PDF of the current plot via email, messages, copied to the pasteboard, or shared via AirDrop, etc.

• The Map screen now allows you to measure distances or relocate a datum by tapping on the map screen at the appropriate spot. The datum is moved to the spot where you lift your finger from the screen. You can also use the new Lasso tool in the map screen to select data to Show, Hide, Delete, or Export. The Show command will just show the data inside the lasso and will hide all of the others.

• When you are entering text in the Datum Details screen, the button in the upper right corner of the screen will change to allow you to use that button to dismiss the keyboard when you tap it. When the keyboard isn't showing, it will revert to the More… button.

• Swiping left on a datum in the Data List Screen will now dsplay three buttons allowing you to hide/show, delete, or show on a map that individual datum.

• A datum collected with the auto orientation from device orientation feature will automatically have latitude and longitude associated with it, even if you did not explicitly turn on GPS (this is possible because auto orientation requires GPS to be turned on, at least temporarily, in order to use the correct magnetic declination).

• New Toolbar icons for buttons match those used in Stereonet Mobile.

• The documentation is now local to the device.
