Dota Underlords’ tutorial makes it all sound so easy, but if you’re familiar with Dota you’ll already know that this is an incredibly deep and rewarding strategy game.

Underlords is among the leaders in a new breed of ‘auto chess’ games, which are very much what they sound like: you lay down your characters on a grid, hit play and the battle unfolds in front of you. The hard part is picking which characters to place down, and where.

And there’s no shortage of options in Underlords, even right from the start. Thankfully, you can ease yourself in gently with a nice variety of single player modes with adjustable difficulty.

To emerge from each battle victorious, be sure to pay careful attention to how characters combine, their strengths and weaknesses plus how the usable items on the right side of the screen can influence the battle.

And because it’s from legendary game-maker Valve, the character art and animation is as detailed and rich as the combat.
