The more time you spend with your squad of Elemental Guardians, the more you grow fond of them.
This is a battle game packed with characters, and, well, character: you can really see the love the Ubisoft team has poured into this motley cast of creatures.
Of course, it’s easy to be charmed by a wee orange griffin with huge blue eyes. But even the mysterious, armour-clad Stone Guard has a certain quirky appeal, not to mention some pretty sweet moves. Every Guardian is animated with such flair, these turn-based battles are a pleasure to watch unfold.
The nod to ‘elements’ in the title is an important one; every one of your squad will be linked to Fire, Water, Air or Earth – and each element has a weakness. Water beats Fire, Fire scorches Earth and so on. You can, should you desire, spend a lifetime tweaking your squad and agonising over which moves to trigger to deal out the most damage.
Or, the impatient players among you will appreciate the option to automate things a little. If you’re going into a battle you’re confident of winning, you can have the game pick your moves and who to strike for you, while also quickening the pace of play by up to three times.
However you play, Ubisoft’s talent for character design and carefully balanced battle mechanics is clear for all to see. Invest a little time learning the nuances of Elemental Guardians and it’ll repay you with a rich and rewarding romp through a sumptuous fantasy world.
