Description

"Catan", the legendary strategy game provides gaming fun anytime, anywhere.

True to the original game, you can compete with up to four players for the most settlements, the longest roads and the largest army. You can trade with each other and claim the precious land with all its resources.

Challenge other Catan fans online via cross-platform multiplayer to prove your strategy skills or play against the AI:
Various computer opponents, each with their own individual characteristics, will prove themselves worthy competitors: the pirate Jean, who knows no compromise, Vincent the merchant, who never allows himself to be cheated, Sean the knight, who takes what is rightfully his...

The popular Catan expansions "Seafarers", "Cities and Knights" and two new special scenarios are available as In-App purchases.

The complete Seafarers expansion includes more than 10 additional scenarios with an extensive campaign. Become Harbormaster, discover new islands and extra game elements like ships, gold fields, treasures and pirates. Ahoy!

The Cities and Knights expansion introduces various new gameplay mechanics that add even more variety to Catan. Invest new trade goods in city improvements to build one of the three metropolises of Catan – but beware of the barbarians attracted by Catan’s new wealth! You’ll need your best knights to fend them off! C&K contains a short campaign and 7 challenging maps.

Exciting adventures await you in the two new scenarios "Enchanted Land" and "The Great Canal". Vanquish dragons and bag their treasures or build a canal to help barren grain fields bloom once more.

Catan FAQ:

Question: An expansion seems gone after an update or reinstallation of Catan or after restoring the device?
Answer: Don’t worry, your initial purchase is already saved in your iTunes account. You can restore your InApp purchases by selecting the restore-option in the Catan IAP menu.

Question: I lost my campaign progress after reinstalling, updating or restoring my device. Is there any way to restore it?
Answer: When saved games can’t be automatically restored, we’ve integrated a cheat code: In the campaign mode go to select player and enter "CatanWarp*" (* = 1–15) as your player name and confirm. Exit the game via the home button and restart it. The campaign can now be continued from the specified level number (1–15). Levels up to the specified number will be unlocked in the custom game mode as well.

Question: Are dice rolls really random?
Answer: Of course! All dice rolls are 100% random and not modified in any way. We’re avid Catan players ourselves. We’ve played the iOS version hundreds of times while developing the program. There have been times when we won and lost a few games in a row because of the dice - just like when playing the board game!

Poor implementation of a great game

Playable only because Catan itself is a great game. The implementation in the app is awful.

1. User interface has not been thought through, e.g. It is easy for a player not to notice that you have not clicked "end turn" and all people wait until he notices that everyone is waiting on him, possibly a minute or more; if someone does not respond to your trade offer for minutes, you cannot just take it back or trade with another player - you must wait until the absent minded responds for the game to continue; if someone has a longer nickname, you simply cannot see the number of cards he has - the name goes over the numbers and there is nothing you can do about it... I could list many more things, but in short, the developer has failed in almost any aspect.

2. There is no elementary intra-game chat that is almost a must in interactive multiplayer games. You can change your emoticon, though - and it is as if a car maker provided a gold plated cup holder on a car that does not have any seats or doors. Well, you can try figure out how to make game conversation via emoticon changes, hehe. Good luck with that! :)

3. Multiplayer functionality is rudimentary. There is no way to assess potential partners on how quick they play and how likely they are to abandon the game (and yes, that happens very often - losing players drop out in early or mid game because there is no punishment for such behaviour). You cannot assess available player pool - just create game and see if you get partners in a minute or still no play after half an hour waiting...Also ELO Ratings are assigned randomly - some games are and some are not taken into account.

4. When you create or join a game, you cannot choose 3 or 4 player option. If you create, you can manipulate by throwing people out (if you are quick), if you join, you never know how it will turn out...

5. There is something wrong with randomness aspect - I have played several games in one session on exactly same map with same field order and same numbers assigned to all fields. I cannot judge the dice, although it feels that I have seen more than a fair share of rare and unlikely strikes for the number of games I have played. Just in case, I believe it is not against / for any human player, it is just a possible flaw that can benefit you or kill you, depending on the game. NB! This is about all human game; games with bots are worse - see next point.

6. AI of computer players / bots is poor; so, to balance the game it seems that the program does two things: 1) skews dice for the benefit of the bot or bots and 2) in case of several bots, make them attack human player even if it would be more logical to attack other bots. Still it is easy to win most games versus bots - just need to adjust strategy to this "not normal catan" and you will win 70-80% of games - which gets boring fast.

To sum up, it is playable if you like catan and have no possibility to play otherwise. However, playing this app will be much slower, less enjoyable and far more often frustrating than you would expect from an app in 2016.

Does not work on ipad 6 gen ipadOS 14

Black display after intro and home screen – what i see after launching this app. On IpadOS 13 was much better! Only few crashing of all the time.

Great

I like it a lot, playing all the time. Put only 4 stars of 5, because it has a couple of annoying bugs, that made me two times to restart the campaigns anew. Hope they get fixed soon! Otherwise - if you like Catan, you will enjoy this game too. Also it is easy to learn, if you have no idea about Catan rules.
