Description

Calculators have changed very little since the 1970s - while phones from that era look ancient. Why should calculators cling to a 40 year old design with a wall of buttons and one row for results in the age of retina displays? We deserve something better. Tydlig brings the calculator to the next level for iPhone & iPad with innovations like freeform canvas, responsive results and linked numbers.

Tydlig is perfect for calculating everyday things like tips and discounts, showing the entire history and allowing you to change any number with instant updates. For deeper calculations real-time graphing is an excellent way to explore and visualize things like bank interest rates and trigonometric functions.

Features:

* Responsive results: Edit any number on the canvas and see all results update automatically. Let your calculator work for you, not the other way around.

* Linked numbers: With a result selected, press any operation to create a linked number below. Responsive results will cascade down these links.

* All history is stored on an infinite scrolling canvas. Drag numbers around and reuse them as you wish.

* Annotate any number with an attached text label, like a freestyle spreadsheet.

* Real-time graphing: Link numbers to a graph and any change to the expression will instantly update the graph. Perfect when trying to explore how functions work and behave.

* Use the Slider to tweak any number and see results and graphs update in real-time. Combined with the graph it is an excellent way to visualize and teach math. Tap the slider to toggle between discrete and continuous modes.

* Share the entire canvas by printing, or exporting as a high quality PDF. You can also copy calculations as text, or save the visible area as an image which can be used in other applications like Pages or Word.

* Undo support.

* Supports external Bluetooth keyboards for really quick digit and basic operations entry (+, -, *, /).

* Tydlig works completely offline, no need to be connected to the internet.

* Lots of power under the hood with a lightning fast calculation engine, over 20 mathematical functions and scientific notation formatting options.

Excel meets mind maps

Great for visually understanding a multi step calculation.

Only, graphs are a bit unintuitive. Never seem to get the, right on first try.

It is okay, but..

Without cursor it is a bit hard to edit equations. And it would be cool if division equations would auto-format to numbers one under another, not just simple “/“ sign as it is now.

Awesome concept!

Thanks for an awesome app. I want it as my default calculator!

But... Despite being a great concept, I have few areas I would like to improve: the UX and the search for an app when it is needed. Thus, only 4 stars for now. But keep it up guys, great work.

Here are some details about improvements I would do to the app:

The search for an app, when it is needed right now is very confusing. I see two ways to open calculator:
1. Use control centre to open calculator. The app does not support it. I would appreciate if the support for it is released.
2. Use app search to find calculator app. The app name is unique, and to be honest, hard to remember. I would appreciate if it had "calculator" in its name, so i can see it in results when searching for "calc...". Alternatively, a button to create shortcut with "calculator" name would be a nice addition in settings.

The UX, based on my experience, does not account for my scenarios. Lets address tagging scenario. Lets name the scenarios I am struggling with first.
1. The app has tagging option accessible from top bar (far to reach). I usually tag as I go, so switching from tagging to writing numbers is a bit frustrating.
2. When tagging, I want to reuse my tags. For example, I am looking to tag "EUR" to differentiate prices from quantities. I want to access my recent tags, instead of typing them every time.
3. I have undone something, while actually planning to remove a character (the 3 icons: to clear with boxed cross, to undo with u-turn arrow, to backspace with arrowed boxed cross did confuse me) and want to redo. I can not achieve this.
4. I use automatic dark mode to see better in the day, and not to get blinded and night. The app seem to have not support for automatic dark and light mode selection.
5. Weirdly, typing is a bit unintuitive when creating labels, I think the keyboard displayed in the app is larger than my native one. The fonts overall appear scaled. I suspect, the framework this app is made with is the reason for it. But it would be nice to respect my device font size preference.
6. When I long press number options to link something, the irrelevant options like "Select all", "translate", "share", "autofill", "lookup" appear. I do not want them there. Also, in white theme, the long press icons are hard to read, they appear white on white.

Here is how I would rework the UI:
1. If possible, rotate the undo u-turn icon to a proper direction, not up, but pointing back (or to the start of the line, based on your RTL/LTR preference)
2. Add the redo button next to undo
3. Remove the tagging button from top, put it inside of the calculator UI, in place of clear button. I think backspace is usually enough to clear. Long pressing a number in calculator typing UI could replace the whole number instead, i.e. hold 0 to replace 555 with 0.
4. Remove the irrelevant options from UI appearing on long press of a number.
5. Replace the autocomplete bar in keyboard with latest used labels
