Jotting down notes, sketches and your generally brilliant ideas on paper is easy – finding a place to safely store and work on said notes, sketches and brilliant ideas so you won’t lose them: slightly harder.

Time then to get acquainted with Carbo, the intuitive, fuss-free app that digitises, saves and organises your handwritten content. To get started, simply take a photo within the app using your iPhone or iPad camera, open a picture from Photos or import a file from iCloud Drive (you can also create a fresh note by choosing Empty Note under the Create Note tab).

Once you’ve picked your note or sketch, the app creates a clear, monochrome version that you can then tweak and edit. Crop it, adjust the line density, thickness or background and stroke colour, and make sections that you want to erase or move to a different position. Stick with the default white background or choose from a collection of styles such as Blackboard (with adjustable chalk colour), Blueprint (with a handy grid layout) or Pop Art (for a splash of vibrancy).

Thanks to app’s neat pixel-free viewing, even when you enlarge or minimise areas of your note within the app, the quality doesn’t deteriorate. When you’re happy with the layout, add annotations and colour-coded tags (art, design, family, fun or technical) that make searching straightforward.

Try using Carbo to sketch logo ideas for a new product and then share your vision with colleagues; it’s perfect for getting across key visuals that might not be conveyed as well with words alone. Or take pictures drawn by the kids, save them within the app and export to print on T-shirts or mugs.

To sync your notes across iCloud, Dropbox or Evernote (or all three), activate Notebooks under the app’s Settings tab and you’ll be able to access your notes wherever and whenever you need to.
