Description

Game of Apps is an after-school program that empowers students with practical technical and life skills to help them succeed in 21st century careers. We offer both high school and middle years programs.

SENIOR PROGRAM

"Startup" School (grades 10 to 12): Students get an intro into what it takes to build a successful mobile app. Students will design the app and learn the Java programming language while learning what factors that determine the success of technology products.

Professional designers and developers working in the Tech industry mentor the students weekly and teach them foundational technology, entrepreneurial and soft skills. Tech-oriented students will gain a better understanding of how Tech products are actually built, while non-tech oriented students might discover a career path in Tech that complements their skillsets and interests. (Hint: there are many career paths for individuals with non-tech skillsets!)

The program culminates in the Game of Apps championship event where students present their app in front of a panel of industry judges.

MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAM

Intro to Coding (grades 6 to 9): We introduce students to core coding concepts using Swift Playgrounds. The fun and supportive environment encourages all students, regardless of background or interest, to acquire coding skills that will help them in whatever future field they pursue.
There are 2 levels to this program. Students who completed level 1 of the Middle Years program may register for level 2. Alternatively, they may also retake level 1 if they wish to strengthen their understanding of the level 1 concepts. Students who have not take Game of Apps before may register for level 1.

SWIFT STUDENT CHALLENGE

Swift Student Challenge: This program is for students who have completed either the Middle Years level 2 program or last season's Senior program.

In this program, we will teach and prepare students to submit an entry to Apple's Swift Student Challenge— this is a part of Apple's annual Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) where students with successful entries win various prizes and Apple swag. Students might also be invited to attend WWDC where they are given a tour of Apple's HQ offices and meet with Apple's executives.

GoA MISSION

Preparing Youth for 21st Century Careers

We are a non-profit society that helps prepare today’s youth for future careers (in technology or otherwise) by teaching them how to think critically, build empathy, and navigate complex and ambiguous problems to create value. We guide them as they put these skills into practice through building technology products, leveraging industry standard tools, and giving them valuable insights into future career options.

Core Principles

* We actively seek youth that may not be drawn naturally to technology, dispel commonly held misconceptions, and show them that a future career in technology may be a viable option.

* We assemble teams of professionals (working in local technology companies) who give back to this next generation by teaching, mentoring and sharing their experiences.

* We partner with educators and community leaders to bridge the gap in today’s technology education.
