Want to build an effective workout, but not sure where to start? Data-based weight-lifting app Fitbod eliminates the guesswork by creating hyper-personalised workout regimens and tracking your success.

What we love: Add your height, weight and age – or sync with the Health app – to establish your current fitness level and activity. Then, faster than it takes to do a squat, Fitbod creates a workout based on your last reported gym sesh. If you’ve just gone for a run, for example, it will focus on the upper body. Each session targets different muscles, ones that are fresh and recovered, and puts them to work.

Fitbod figures out which muscle groups to target, the proper weight and resistance and the ideal amount of sets.

Quick tip: If you’ve got an injury (or an equipment limitation), you can change exercises by swiping left to delete – replace the movement with a related task or something totally new. If you need a little guidance, tap each exercise to view a how-to video.

Meet the creator: Allen Chen and Jesse Venticinque came up with the idea for Fitbod while working out at a friend’s gym in San Francisco. They recognised the need for an easy-to-access program that could draw on past fitness progress, develop plans in real time and adapt to any gym’s equipment.
