Deconstruct a racing game and what do you get? A driver, a few wheels and the road ahead. The minimalist Rad Trails is just that, but with style pulled straight from an ’80s arcade.
You control a neon-laced wireframe motorcycle rider tearing across a stark neon backdrop. Yes, the awesome visuals and catchy soundtrack will immediately grab you, but it’s the slick, physics-based racing that’ll keep you riding.
Here, thrashing the throttle will only get you so far. You’ll also need to shift the weight of your glowing avatar back and forth as you attack the hilly jumps in order to keep your momentum and work your way up the time-based leaderboards. To earn speed boosts you can pull wheelies or try stick a flip before crashing back to terra firma. Just be sure to judge your rotation and timings right to avoid wiping out.
With its combination of elegant controls and stylish delivery, Rad Trails becomes almost meditative as you leave levels in the dust. If, however, you’ve got a more competitive steak you can join teams to battle for online supremacy. However you roll, just make sure to keep it rad.
