There’s something instinctively appealing about watching a well-oiled production line at work. Combine that with the curious pleasure we all get from seeing numbers going up and you have Idle Supermarket Tycoon: a moreish, endlessly rewarding game.

As the tycoon of the title, all you have to worry about is where to invest your cash. Adding a department or hiring new staff is a single tap away – though improving the quality of your produce should be your first job, to tempt more customers through the doors.

Before long, you’ll need more staff to stop queues building up, and cashiers and parking spaces to cope with the rush. Then comes an in-store bakery, a butcher and a seafood department, each earning you more and more money.

Who said the high street was dead? All you have to do is keep tap tap tapping.

There’s only so far you can get within a quiet residential area, though. Sell up and move into the city and you’ll find customers more willing to spend big, even if it means starting over.

While you’ll make a packet from just leaving things running, it’s fun just to watch the simulation play out. And in studying the flow of customers as they mill about before getting into their cars and driving home, you’ll see which areas need attention even without checking your stats sheet.

After a while you’ll be making septillions in seconds, while doing nothing but sitting back and listening to the jazzy soundtrack and the ka-ching of the tills. If only running a real-life business was as easy as being an Idle Supermarket Tycoon, eh?
