On Alien Shores
Some of the biggest struggles happen in unfamiliar places. Don’t Starve puts you on an island full of weird animals, relics, and shadow monsters. Minecraft’s survival mode pits you against skeletons and other foes in a cube-based realm. Or you can face more story-based challenges in space—befriending natives on Crashlands’ distant world and looting planets in Out There: Ω Edition.
Scary Scenes
These favourites use horror tropes to up the tension. In Into the Dead 2, sprint through hordes of zombies, trying to nab ammo without slowing down. To outlast Mini DayZ’s undead foes, you’ll have to masterfully scavenge for supplies, while animatronic creatures haunt your evenings in Five Nights at Freddy’s: Sister Location.

Life-and-death scenarios don’t get much more grim than This War of Mine. In this thought-provoking game, you’re a civilian in a war zone—trading, managing a shelter, and avoiding snipers. For a less serious twist on real-world strife, try Rules of Survival. If you’re the last player standing in its battle-royale-style matches, consider yourself an expert in self-preservation.
