Some ideas are brilliantly simple and what3words is one of them. The app has divided the world into 57 trillion squares and labelled each one with three words.

Because each square is just three metres wide, those three words enable you to locate not just a place but a very specific area of that place.

Think of somewhere like a university, for example: wouldn’t it be great if your map showed the exact entrance you needed rather than the centre of the entire campus? What3words does just that, making it particularly great for directions.

You can give more precise directions using what3words.

And you’re not limited to places that have addresses – great news for outdoors types, whether that’s sharing the location of the ninth hole on a golf course or somewhere further off the beaten track.

So, the next time you’re at a gig or a festival, you can arrange to meet your friends at ///pepper.whoever.stiletto, rather than vague mentions of the third portaloo on the right or which food trucks you can smell.
