If you’re into provocative US series American Dad!, you’ll be into this.
The maker of Apocalypse Soon has worked with the long-running cartoon’s writers to really nail the risqué humour of the show in this cheeky blend of base-building and battling.
The set-up is that there’s an alien invasion, and to save the world you must build a formidable underground base full of Roger clones – the sarcastic, cynical alien of the TV show – and then send them off to save America.
So, as obnoxious, jingoistic CIA agent Stan Smith you’re directing the action, building an army of Rogers by building cloning rooms, training facilities and other room types deep underneath the Smith family home.
Outside of all that base-building, there’s progress to be made through battles out in the wastelands of Langley Falls, the show’s suburban setting. Here your Rogers fight automatically based on the abilities and weapons you’ve given them – so don’t send them into battle under-prepared.
The whole thing is shot through with the knowing humour from the TV show, plus that same over-the-top aesthetic it shares with Seth MacFarlane’s other cartoon creation, Family Guy.
Whether you’re a fan of the show or not, Apocalypse Soon has buckets of subversive sass – more than enough to keep you returning to Langley Falls again and again.
