Needs serious work

Sometime back I wrote this is one of the worst apps I’ve ever used. It still stands. Thankfully I don’t have to deal with it on the daily because I control the Harmony Hub with an automation controller but from time to time, like today, I need to add/remove a device and it’s like time has stood still.

Targets are either too small or accidental rejection is turned all the way up where it shouldn’t. The paging-style advancing menus are too slow, too ambiguous, to use, I don’t think they even mapped them out visually before they decided too pass along this poor judgement onto the users.

It’s ironic that a company in the Human-Machine/User Interface and Ergonomics business is so notoriously bad at it. I have a Logitech MX Master 2 and it’s a joy to use. This isn’t, not even visually attractive, seeing they are focusing more into the wow-effect. Designing for touchscreens is difficult to begin with, they don’t make good UIs, they make good canvas but they lack the tactile feedback—induced haptics do not count—but not they only don’t know how to work with them; they insist on keep on using them as control surfaces. Think when your using your iPad, if you are not mostly reading or watching a photo or video it gets tedious shifting your hands, maybe even body as a consequence every time you reach for a target.

There’s also the problem of the Wi-Fi in the Hub, to setup from scratch devices must be on the same SSID, but it is not WPA2-EAP compatible meaning it has to connect to connect via MAC RADIUS authentication which is extremely hard to setup for those who don’t work in IT and the device to set it up with needs special treatment too because normally this is not the same type of network to which devices that WPA2-EAP like smartphones, can connect. Once setup they can work on different SSIDs in the same network, thankfully.

Logitech should be way more pragmatic here ‘cause they’re doing a horrible job. I discovered recently when they sent some update and broke my devices that a lot of people buying things like the Harmony Hub are developers and home owners looking to integrate the thing into another system, Logitech has no Linux support leaving out probably their most important user base.
