Description

"Stolpersteine commemorate the victims of the Nazi regime. With texts, photos, audio, graphic stories and augmented reality elements, the app provides interactive information about people who lived in your street or town during the Nazi era: Stolpersteine NRW brings history to life.

Note on use: This app uses Google Maps to navigate to the Stolpersteine and the Google Firebase service, which is required for the AR functions. This transfers data to Google.

There are around 17,000 Stolpersteine in North Rhine-Westphalia, which have been laid in more than 280 cities. Each stone commemorates a person who was a victim of National Socialism.
Stolpersteine NRW takes you on an interactive journey to where the victims last lived before they were forced to flee, commit suicide or were deported.
Stolpersteine NRW provides information about the individual lifes of the victims, for example in the form of:

- biographical texts and audio stories
- artistic illustrations in the form of graphic stories
- historical photos, audio recordings and videos
- augmented reality content

Additionally, there are the following contents:

- Map with all Stolperstein locations
- Suggestions for Stolperstein routes through North Rhine-Westphalian cities
- Teaching material (in cooperation with “Planet Schule”)
- Interactive filters for searching and researching all 17,000 data records

Experts from more than 250 cities in North Rhine-Westphalia have supported this project. Without their knowledge and research support, the project would not have been possible.

We look forward to receiving feedback at stolpersteine@wdr.de!

In NRW there are around 17,000 Stolpersteine in more than 280 towns and cities. The first Stolpersteine were laid in Cologne in 1992. More follow every year."

What’s New

Version 1.6.12

New Features and Optimizations:
• Interactive Participation Feature "Clean or Dirty?"
Users can provide feedback on each stone with a single click: Is the surface clean and thus legible? Or is the inscription weathered or dirty, making it difficult to read? The reported condition of each stone is displayed for all users in the app.
• Interactive Map Filter "Clean or Dirty?"
Users can view all the stones that need cleaning on the map. Users who have cleaned stones themselves can also report this in the app.
• Stone Clustering on the Map: The display of Stolpersteine and placement locations on the map has been completely redesigned. Depending on the map’s zoom level, too many stones in a small map section will be grouped into circle clusters. This improves the map's performance. However, the correct number of stones in the visible map area will still be shown at every zoom level.
• Augmented Reality Tutorial: All AR-based tours (currently only in Cologne) now begin with an introductory video onboarding.
• Audioplayer Updated: The design of the player has been updated. Users can change the playback speed to 0.5x, 1.5x, or 2x.
• Automatic Scrolling: When Graphic Stories, Text Stories, or Audio Stories are linked on the homepage (=the home feed), the app will automatically scroll to the relevant content on the destination page (=the stone feed).
• New Filter for Content Produced by Students
• Order of Content Filters in the Map Adjusted
• Extensive Usability Improvements in the AR Area
