If you’re a ’90s kid, there’s a good chance that back in the day, playing Contra and squabbling with your siblings or friends over control of the gamepad, seemed like the most important thing in life. And this might explain those frustrated throws of said gamepad against a wall after losing a challenging boss battle! But that’s what the Konami code was for, right?
With Garena Contra Returns, you can now enjoy all that glorious run-and-gun action once again, only this time, it’s on your iPhone or iPad, recreated with sleek modern graphics and audio. Everything you once loved is here, from the soundtrack and weapon effects to enemy designs. When you encounter bosses for the first time, the game even shows images from the classic version for a side-by-side comparison.
This game is not merely a new paint job though. You’ll find plenty of exciting additions: double-jumps, controllable mechs, dazzling special attacks, new heroes, plus different game modes. Want to play as a cyborg werewolf with an arm cannon? Or perhaps a bear with frosty attacks is more up your gaming street. There’s something for every action-lover here.
In celebration of its first anniversary, Garena Contra Returns welcomes a new heroine: Glainne. With excellent crowd-control and serious offensive capabilities, she proudly rides into battle atop a mechanical dragon. Along with her entrance is the game’s first Rank SS pet: a powerful robot with massive area-of-effect damage, appropriately named Aurora Destroyer. Last but not least, the new Exotic Dimension Adventure mode lets you acquire new upgrade materials to boost your firepower significantly.
The game features a sophisticated upgrading and crafting system to boost your heroes’ capabilities and weapon power. Soon, you’ll find yourself becoming an unstoppable one-person (or one-bear) army. While there’s no Konami code for this modern version, there’s too many other cool features to really miss it. Instead of being dispensable one-hit wonders like before, your warriors will benefit from a health bar which can be replenished through Revives, should it deplete during a mission. For seasoned players who enjoy old-school difficulty, there’s the “One Life Mode” challenge, where a single hit from the enemy will end your run immediately – so watch out!
The icing on this Contra cake is that you can also compete against your friends in PVP mode, or call upon your best pal to join you on a mission to save the world in Duo mode. Now all that’s left to do is gather your old gang and relive all the fun with a fresh Contra party.
