A Lab in Your Pocket

Learning science can always be more fun. That was the idea that Komal Dadlani, CEO and co-founder of the Chilean studio Lab4U had in mind when studying biochemistry at the University of Chile.

"You can not learn to ride a bicycle by reading a book, you have to live the experience and ride the bicycle. The same happens with science", she says.

The solution? Leverage the built-in sensors of the iPhone and iPad to enable teachers to improve their physics lessons through experiments. The accelerometer, the sonometer, the speedometer, the microphone and the camera, which are usually used for games and taking selfies, can also be applied to science education.

And that's how Lab4Physics came to the surface!

Do you want to figure out the difference between distance and displacement? Jump on the You´ve Got the Moves experiment. Just start walking with your device. It will build a reference system that through graphics will show you the difference.

If you want to know how a sound´s wave looks like, go to the experiment Marie Curie so Wavy. Whistle close to the speaker and you will see the sound´s shape in an amplitude vs. time graphic.

There are multiple experiments for you to discover the principles of physics, beyond books. Just a little warning: the activities are designed for children over thirteen. For the teachers, there are also support materials that will help them to include the app's experiments in their classes. "Talent is universal, but not the opportunities. We want to democratize science by enabling both teachers and students to have a laboratory in their pockets," says Dadlani.

Now it's your turn to learn by experimenting: Are you ready to be the next Nikola Tesla or next the new Marie Curie?
